Neon Genesis Evangelion... the anime that upset Japan!

Here we are to talk about the one that, in my opinion, is the greatest anime ever. Before I start I would like to give my thanks to Veggie who has granted me this "little" spot just for Evangelion...
Now I will try to explain what Evangelion is and, believe me, this is a very difficult task... if you do not understand my summary you can contact me by ICQ 127861055 or you can come and visit my forum which is completely dedicated to Evangelion (www.ngeforum.cjb.net).

THE STORY
In the year 2000 a meteorite falls on Antarctic. This is what the government want to make us believe... but the truth is much different... In a very short time the sea levels awfully rise due to melting of the polar ice and because of wars and famines caused by this terrible event roughly half of population dies.
In 2015 Tokyo no longer exists. Neo Tokyo 3, apparently a normal city still under construction, rises by Ashino Lake. But under the city there is the last stronghold oh humanity, the subordinated agency of United Nation, the Nerv.
The danger is not gone yet.... Mysterious creatures attack Neo Tokyo 3 apparently with no reason. But men knew. Men are ready this time. This is not the first visit of these creatures. This time they will not be overtaken.
In order to confront the threat of human destruction, during the last 15 years Nerv has designed and tested some bio-mechanical giant namely EVANGELIONS (better know as Evas).
At the beginning of the story (which is not the real begin as we will discover by tormented flashback) two units are already ready: Unit 00 , leaded by Rei Ayanami, and Unit 01, that soon will be under the command of Shinji Ikari, the introvert and timid son of Gendo Ikari, commandant of Nerv.
The pilots are named Children and they are 14 years old teenagers. They are not heroes as the ones we may find in TATSUNOKO's production (the famous Japanese animation house of giants robots and things like that), but they all have very serious psychological problems. Shinji saw his mother die and then his father forsook him; Rei is a very mysterious and silent girl (no one knows her past or where she comes from); Asuka (the pilot of Unit 02, who will show up later) a bold and egocentric girl [?] has lost her mother too... in short every character has his troubles.
This is the main line that keep the story together, but a really advise you to watch it because my summary does not show Neon Genesis Evangelion complexity at all.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is a GAINAX Studio production (a very famous Japanese animation house. Among his productions we remember Evangelion, Fushigi no Umi no Nadia, Top o Nerae, Kareshi Kanojo, Optaku no Video and Codename FLC). Neon Genesis Evangelion is a series of 26 episodes and two specials that re-edit the two final episodes, and it is considered the animation wonder of 90's. In fact there are tons of gadgets that get inspiration from it.
But the very best of Evangelion are its experimental animations that have revolutionised anime's world, its very complicated psychological plot and its wonderful fights... but if you really want to understand what Evangelion is....well.. just watch it!
