Our Special Guest Star Archive
of music videos grows rich in another anime: Mobile Suite Gundam Wing!
As we use to do, besides to enjoy you with 3 music videos of as many creators,
we offer an interesting info schedule made by Zechs, a very Mobile Suit
fan since the first RX78!!
Action... more action... and feelings: these are things we can find in
the music videos of this Gundam Special:
- the first music video, by
Hot Fudge Productions, "Invincible", is dedicated
to five Gundam pilots ... "we will be invincible", as from the
words of Pat Benatar song;
- a tribute to Heero Yuy...
"How can you not like this guy?" says Dan Milliken - Outlawed
about his video "Professional Badass";
- and to come to a great end...
"Gundam Wing - Born to Raise Hell", a very frantic music
video made by our friend Akira, full of action and with an excellent
timing! ^__-

"Over
half a century has passed since, due to overpopulation, part of the Earthlings
has been drived to live in colonies in outer space. These colonies are
now a second homeland for these populations who live, work, procreate,
in short do the same life they were used on Mother Earth.
It is the year 0079 of the Universal Century: the colonies of Side 3,
the furthest from the Earth, have declared themselves the Duchy of Zeon
and have launched a war of independence against the United Earth Government,
with the aim to dominate all the other colonies. An apocalyptic war is
engaged between the Confederation and the Duchy of Zeon. During
the first month of war, over 10 milions of people died and the battle
had been dragged for over 8 months, with no winner nor looser."
With these prologue begins one of the most popular animated robot series
in the history. We are talking, of course, about the very long series
dedicated to the White Mobile Suit by Sunrise that, althought
25 years have passed, still remains a clear memory in the mind of the
ones who had the possibility to enjoy the deepness and complexity of the
story. Born from the mind of the genius GO Nagai and from the pencil
of Kunio Okawara, the same author of the mecha design of Daitarn
III, and inspired to Heinlein's romance "Space Infantry",
the Gundam series became a symbol for a country in economical recovery
as Japan.
The anime describes the battle in UC 0079 between the United Earth Government
and the Duchy of Zeon, space colony that declares itself indipendent and
ready to dominate all the others.
Similes and differences: Gundam Wing compared with the first 0079...
Shown in Japan in 1995 , this series is one of the most involving anime
ever realized, and for technical production and for settings. Comparable
for many aspects to the first series of 1979, it describes the conflicts
among the space colonies and the United Earth Government that is dominating
the pacifiest colonies. So it's born the Meteor Operation that
will see five kids piloting five battle gundams, who have the task to
stop on Earth the Terrestrial Army. Leaded by the rebel and misterious
Heero Yuy, the five kids (Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton,
Quatre Raberba Winner, Chang Wufei) will fight for a common
ideal against the army leaded by Treize Khushrenada and Zechs
Merquise. Zechs is a member of the specials (terrestrial fighting
elite) who, together to the five boys, will remain involved in the dramatic
development of the war that will take, just like in the original series,
to the consciousness that peace is the only force that can keep the people
united. Although, in fact, the gundam pilots were originally sent on Earth
to fight and destroy in the name of the freedom for the colonies, at the
end, joining Relena's forces (Zechs's sister), they will lead a
crusade in order to put peace among all the parties.
With an extraordinary mecha design, in Gundam Wing we find again
Okawara Kunio, designer of the original series. Even maintaining a style
very similar to the original one, the new look of the battle mobile suit
is more suiting an animation style much more accurate and advanced.
Gundam Wing represents one of the best anime inspired to the more famous
series by Sunrise. In fact, by returning to talk about the original themes,
Masashi ikeda has been able to pick the true essence of the original
series, joining, with wisdom, the characters profiles (always very deep
and quite indefinite) to the frantic action typical of the robot series.
With a mecha design of first order realized by Junya Ishigaki,
Hajime Katoki and Kunio Okawara, the 49 episodes, full of
action and feelings, are the first real occasion to see the new adventures
of the series.
Not everyone knows that...
The name G.U.N.D.A.M. means General purpose Utility Non Discontinuous
Augmentation Maneuvering Weapon System.
The right pronunciation of "Gundam" is "Gandam"; while
in Japanese it is pronunced "Gandamu".
The Gundam saga is inspired to Heinlein's romance Space Infantry.
Mobile Suit means Mobile Space Utility Instruments Tactical.
The abbreviation RX means Robotic Mobile Weapon Experimental.
The name Gundam was one of the three names chosen for the Jasdam Base
of Danguard; discard for the series, it was then used by Bandai to produce
the robot models.
About Gundam Wing...
Heero Yuy "heero" derives from the Japanese "Hiro"
that means "first" and "yuy" means "alone"
in Japanese.
Duo Maxwell "duo" derives from the Italian "due"
that means "two", but it can also means "group formed by
two people".

Lucrezia Noin "noin" is "nine" in German ("neun").

Catherine Bloom "Catherine" derives form the French "quatrine"
which means "fourteen".
Generale Septem "septem" derives form latin and means
"seven".
Generale Nobenta "nobenta" is "ninenty" in
Spanish.
Luogotenente Otto "otto" is the Italian "eight".
Dekim "dekim" may derives from the latin "decem"
that's "ten".
Quinze "quinze" is "fifteen" in French.

A few years previously I had thought of the song "Invincible"
by Pat Benatar in conjunction with Babylon 5, especially the events
of season 3. The whole conflict with the corrupt EarthGov as well
as the Shadow War seemed to fit the lyrics nicely. However, it now
occured to me that the theme fit the story and spirit of Gundam
Wing as well. After listening to the song, Melinda (one of two authors
ndVeggie) agreed and so we began our first full length anime
music video.
Before even starting to capture video, we spent hours discussing
the theme of the video, a process that continued throughout the
entire project. As we went, the theme developed from a general matching
of lyrics to action and an overall theme of "we (Gundam pilots)
will be invincible" to a much more complex set of layered themes,
sub-themes and chronological progressions within the themes. Of
course, it turned out later that most casual viewers picked up just
the main theme, but that's ok. If anyone is interested in the more
detailed thoughts we had, we'll be writing a summary... someday.
In our copious amounts of spare time.

A tribute to Heero Yuy. How can you not like this guy?
This was an obvious choice for my third music video. I really liked
Gundam W and after buying all the LD's for this show and sitting
through an all night viewing session I had my mind set on making
this video. There are only two things I wanted to be better in this
video but there is a point where you need to move on to other projects.
The opening "flashback" to the end of the first episode
which serves as the intro to this video was reworked so the old
film effect looked better than the beta version but I still am not
completely satisfied with the way it looks. The other part I wanted
to be better is at the beginning of the video. When Heero moves
his lips as the song is getting started, I wanted to dub in the
words he spoke at that point in the anime ("Mission Complete").
However I was not able to successfully isolate his voice from the
background voices, music, and noise with the amount of time I was
comfortable spending on getting this into the video.

Note by Veggie
A very spectacular and rich in action video! Most of the scenes
runs at a very frantic rhythm following the music of "Born
to Raise Hell" and the timing, generally good, somewhere is
very excellent! All of the five kids Gundam pilots are protagonists
of the clips showing them in their most cruel fights and their performances.
But we can also see some touching scene. I recommend the ending...
please note how the musical notes of Motorhead's song vanish with
the images...
