Well now we're going into a very new world, the one of alchemy from Fullmetal Alchemist! It's new because this isn't your average series about magic and monsters... Licensed by FUNimation in 2004 and aired on Cartoon Network [Adult Swim] in 2005, it's now available on DVD too, but the otaku fans could already know all the series thanks to the fansub community. The anime, composed of 51 episodes, is an adaptation from Hiromu Arakawa's manga of the same title, still ongoing in Japan, and got a sequel "Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shambala" (alternative title "Hagaren - The Movie"), premiered in Japan on 2005/07/21 and winner of the 5th Tokyo Anime Award (Animation Of The Year). Let's see what can we offer here on Dragon Ball Arena...

People cannot gain anything without sacrificing something.
You must present something of equal value to gain something...
That is the principle of equivalent trade in alchemy.

Then we thought that everything followed this rule.

Fullmetal Alchemist - The Story
This is a series that will inevitably keep viewers hooked from beginning to end, because of its web of eerie revelations and mysteries. In the storyline a major element is Alchemy, a science of manipulating substance and changing it to another. But this manipulating process doesn't come without a cost, because alchemy operates on the theory of equivalent trade: you must present something of equal value to gain something...
This is the place where our protagonists, the young brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, come into play. At an early age their father goes away and leaves their mom Trisha alone to take care of those two little boys. When they lose their mom too to a rare illness, Al and Ed attempt to bring her back using the most forbidden of alchemic practices: the Human Transmutation. But they fail and the price is very high because Edward loses his left leg and Alphonse his entire body... Ed is able to graft Al's soul to a huge suit of armor at the cost of his arm. Years later, Edward, outfitted with two new metal limbs (that's the reason he'll soon be known everywhere as the "Fullmetal Alchemist") and Alphonse, still sealed into the armor, embark on a journey to find the legendary Philosopher's Stone, an artifact that is rumored will increase its possessor's power and can reduce the cost to manipulate objects greatly.
So, the two brothers, with their absolute and unwavering reciprocal love, carry on searching for the stone that can restore Ed's limbs and reunite Al's soul and body...

For this AMV I decided to try working with motion blur associated with lip sync to make it looks very natural. The hardest part was to find the right scenes to mix this techno song and a quite serious anime in order to make it really fun and original and I've put quite a bit of work to get all the timing and flow right. I also used different motion effect to give the AMV a much more 3D feel and to kept up the high impact mood of the vid.

My personal 'ambition' on this one was to release a thrilling (i.e. not boring) instrumental AMV while getting back to the action genre.
"Of Human Ambition and Divine Power" has been my biggest project so far. The dates don't mean anything since I had been obliged to stop working on it because of schoolwork. Just consider speedwatching 51 episodes with virtualDub and browsing through 388 selected excerpts during each editing session! :)
Before starting the main editing job (i.e. after working on the transmutation FX that you have seen in the trailer), I have taken some time to study and learn from successful videos. I have identified several "rules" that one has to apply to get a sexy footage. Those rules in mind, and my epic idea in ind, I started to build the video, not step by step, but more like a jigsaw puzzle made of images, feelings and sounds.
You'll see that the AMV is more or less divided in two parts. Here are a few comments on how they have been made.
- Part 1 -
In other words, the Miracle. This part is more like an extended version of the teaser, with a fast-paced rhythm and an epic soundtrack. I wanted to show one of the most important sides of the anime : all that the stone has triggered, because of the humans' twisted ambitions.
I have tried to keep the messages as short as they are evocative, the images as intense as the building up symphonic climax.
- Part 2 -
Part 2 starts with a release of tension. As a mysterious atmosphere builds up, Edward remembers who he has become, and prepares for confrontation.
This is a more 'traditional' footage, with several innuendos referring to the series storyline. FX usage follow a crescendo, starting from blunt crossfadings to a complex "assimilation" effect! :)
The whole AMV has taken approximately 20 hours to make (without counting the time spent in extracting scenes from the series), using VirtualDub, Vegas Video 3.0, Corel Photo-Paint and Nero Wave Editor.

Disclaimer: I would like to start by saying that I made a vow when I began making AMVs NEVER to make a Linkin Park video, regardless of how much I enjoy their music. However, I was searching for an appropriate song for Fullmetal Alchemist and happened across "Somewhere I Belong" in my audio files... and I knew that the vow must be broken. The song fits Edward-kun perfectly. This being said, I realized that I'd have to make the video as good as it possibly could be to counter-act the overuse of LP, hence I've spent well over a hundred hours on this video.
The first incarnation of the video I finished in about 10 hours, then tried to export. It wouldn't work. I discovered that because half of the fansubs I was using to edit were XviD encodes, the B-frame decoder lag was at work, and none of the clips I had used from episodes 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, or 16 would export. I gave up on the video as a lost cause for about a week, then decided that it was just too good to give up on and began re-encoding all the XviD episodes as DivX. I realized that this would result in quality loss but decided that it was worth the risk. (All subtitles were cropped out using the crop line of AVS script.)
After a good 10 hours of encoding, I was ready to replace all the clips I had previously used with the nex DivX ones. This took another 5 or 6 hours. Then began the process of refining and re-drafting. I also found that the version of the song I was previously using was awful quality, so after searching our entire campus for someone with the CD (unsuccessfully) I drove to Newbury Comics and picked up a copy. I'm chalking up the 16$ as a reasonable expense. ^^
Many, MANY thanks are in order to DOKool, who watched versions 1-5 of this video and pushed me to make it better each time. He also helped me immeasurably with the "scratched" section of the song, which I found that I just couldn't read.
I also nearly had a mental breakdown when I realized that my FPS settings in premiere were incorrect, and that I was editing in a different fps than the video files I was using. Finally, after countless hours, two moments of near insanity, and 5 drafts, I feel that this video is ready to be put up for download. I hope that you enjoy it, please leave an opinion and let me know if you do - or don't! ^^

In this video I tried to show Ed and Al's mistakes done in the series (example: transmuting their mom). I also tried to show how Ed felt "guilty" about putting his brothers soul into a suit of armor and how Al felt empty inside about not remember how he was when he was human.
In this video I used different effects as you may notice. There were mainly 3 new effects. One which I used at the beginning and through most of the vid where 1/4 of the video showed that matched with the piano keys. The second is where the screen zoomed in and shaked. The third were the cut-outs. Enjoy! ^_^
