What has a guy named Boyakki (fans of Time Bokan series certainly know him) got to do with Dragon Ball? Now we're going to explain...
A friend of our forum hides himself behind this nickname and enjoyed collecting some curiosities about Dragon Ball's world! Give a look and will discover some very interesting things!! ^__^

| Names | Suppa Saiya-jin IV | Toriyama & Co. |

| Dr. Slump & Dragon Ball | Videogames & Dragon Ball |

Looking at Dragon Ball, you immediately note, or rather you hear, that the names of the Saiyans remember some types of vegetables. Here is some example...
Kakaroth = carrot;
Radditz = radish;
Vegeta = vegetable;
Trunks = trunks;
Paragas = asparagus;
Brolli = broccoli.

But someone could tell that also the names of the "freezerians" have a common particularity: they are all names that have got to do with the cold (Freezer, Cooler, King Cold). However the oddity is that Toriyama, or who for him, disseminated the whole series with these puns in the names of the characters, since the first DB series! Don't you believe it? Give a look at the following things...

But let's come back to Freeza, or rather, to someone near him, that's the Ginyu Force: the very strange names of these Freeza's henchmen are very mangled words from English language, indicating dairy products. Let's see...
Jiisu -> Jeeth = cheese;
Baata -> Burter = butter;
Likuum -> Recoom = cream;
Gurudo -> yogurudo = yogurt.
About Ginyu's name, I'm not sure, but it seems that it is derived from some japanese word meaning "milk". And usually where do you put "milk & Co."? But into the Freezer! He he he!!! Uhm... among Freeza's henchmen there are Zarbon and Dodoria too; it seems that their names are derivated from some exotic fruit but I don't know anything else about these.

As I told, let's come back to the first DB series: if we wanna talk about the name of Goku's best friend, Kuririn, we discover that this transliteration hides something: in fact it means approximately "chestnut" (in Toriyama's "Dr. Slump and Arale-chan" there is also a character named Daigoro Kurigashira and he really has got a head seening like a chestnut). And if we think that his daughter's name is Marron, we have no doubt anymore: in French "marron" just means chestnut (have you ever heard to talk about marrons glacés?).

And talking about Bulma, we discover that she has got something to do with underclothes: her name is derived from "buruma", a distortion of "bloomer", a word indicating a sort of elastic pants. Her daughter's name, Bra, just means "brassiere"; someone who wanna be witty, could say she makes a nice pair with Chi Chi, 'cause Goku's wife name means "breasts"...

Let's examine some minor character: Lunch means... "lunch"... ^__^, the midday dinner; Oolong is the name of a sort of green tea and Puar is a Chinese Tea. Pilaf is a fried-rice dish, while his henchmen's names Mai and Shu, both mean approximately "hors-d'oeuvre" or "aperitif". And moreover, it would seem that the meaning of Tenshinhan's name is "plate", but I don't know if as dish or as crockery... (but Toriyama, how much does he eat?!). Yajirobe should indicate a sort of top or however a wheeling toy. Among the bad guys, we can note that Red Ribbon Army commanders are named as a colour (general Blue, captain Yellow colonel Violet, colonel Silver, general White, ninja Murasaki/Master Sergeant Purple, General Red). And going on... one of Uranai Baba's monsters is called Akkuman, in italian DB episodes he's renamed Devil... but no matter, because the meaning is the same!

Now here we are to one of the main characters of the first series: Piccolo Daimao. In italian episodes he is called "Grande Mago Piccolo" that you can translate as "Big Wizard Small". Then you could say "But this guy is big or small?" As a matter of fact, in this case "piccolo" (the italian for "small") is the english word indicating a wind musical instrument, the piccolo, a sort of clarinet. You can find this "musical" theme in the names of two powerful demons created by Piccolo Daimao: Tambourine and Cymbal. But the names of the other Nameks (except Piccolo) seem to have the meaning of snail, and for Dende and for Nail. And moreover, in DBZ movie #4 we meet the Super Namek Slug, a word meaning a big snail; so we could ask "Why Nameks must have names of snails?" ... And the answer could be "Maybe 'cause they've got antennae...?!"

By now we arrived to DBZ, so let's go to analyze the names of good and bad guys of this series: as you note androids names are numbers, while Cell is just called as a cell, the right name for such a product of bio-engineering! The meaning of Mr. Satan's name is clear, but paying attention, if you anagrammatize his daughter's name Videl, you can discover it comes out "devil"! So we've got satan & devil! What good names they are! Majin Bu's name seems to have not a meaning, but if we think his creator is Bibidi and the name of this one's son is Babidi... we've got "Bibidi-Babidi-Bu"! What?! Now in Dragon Ball we meet Walt Disney too?! And talking about other bad guys, Garlic and his son Garlic Jr. (who also appear in DBZ movie #1)... don't you think their names are funny?

Now it's time to take a look in Dragon Ball GT: the original name of the race where Bebi comes from isn't Tsufuru but Tsuifr! Well... this word is the anagram of "fruits" and... did you note that Tsuifr Planet was called Plant? If we wanna still talk about planets, the name of hospital planet, where Goku, Trunks and Pan arrive in DBGT episode #24, isn't Vidal, but Pital, that's just the short for "hospital"; I think in italian episodes they changed its name from Pital to Vidal cause the true name is like "pitale" the italian for "chamber-pot"!

Nothing more to say... except something about the movies: did you note the "vegetal" name of the wicked scientist in DBZ movie #2? He's called Dr. Willow! But I'm sure there is still more to discover in DBZ movies, even if I didn't find anything yet! Uhm... let me think a moment about the latest: in DBZ movie #13 we meet Tapion! Well... I smell a rat about this character's name! And moreover we find that planet called Conuts rhyming with "donuts"...
Now I think some of you will manage to find many other curiosities! ^__^
